The Story of
Waugh Woods

Our journey began with a few pieces of barn wood that we kept for years to remind us of the years we spent working at Red Raider Camps for Boys and Girls, located on lovely, wooded land between Burton and Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

We worked in summers, but in winter, students from local schools came to the camp for nature studies They helped collect the maple tree sap and watched it turn into sugar at the 100 year-old Sugar Barn. Before we closed this chapter of our lives, we wanted to have something that would keep the fond memories alive and preserve a little piece of history. We found a few fallen boards from the old barn. One of the art student counselors painted grapes on one piece of the wood, and we kept the other two pieces for some future project.

Many years later, the inspiration came to use the wood when I found two iron handles at a garage sale. The result was a rustic barn wood tray that we have used for serving and decorating. Friends who saw it asked if we could make one for them, and Waugh Woods was off and running.
The journey continued when our nephew bought a farm in Tennessee with a rickety, old barn. He brought us a few pieces, and the rest is history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the trays utilitarian?
The trays are primarily used for serving. We recommend not putting food directly on the wood because the rustic surface would be difficult to clean. We use a brush to dust and clean al the nooks and crannies.
What if I don't have a lot of space?
Trays come in various sizes. Also, they can be displayed on a stand as an art piece or as a background for something you want to feature.
What if my style is more traditional than rustic?
Mixing styles is very common, especially if you want to add the warmth of an old piece.
What if I have a more sleek, minimalist look?
A touch of rustic can add interest without clutter.
